（36）２０１２年に、患者が処方された毒物を飲んで死ぬ際に医療職が同席していたケースは77人のうち11人のみだった。処方薬では死に切れない患者が報告されている点でもこれは問題だが、本当に患者が自分の意思で飲んだのか、金銭問題など利害関係のある家族に飲まされたり、飲むようにそそのかされての行為だったとしても分からない。そこには尊厳死法が高齢者虐待に利用される可能性が潜んでいる。

（38）米国で自殺幇助合法化への世論形成に多大な影響力を及ぼしてきた合法化ロビーは「コンパッション・アンド・チョイス（Ｃ＆Ｃ）」。前身は、日本でも翻訳された（すでに絶版）“Final Exit”（1991）という自殺指南書の著者、デレック・ハンフリーが創設したヘムロック・ソサエティである。オレゴンの幇助自殺では大半のケースにＣ＆Ｃが関与しており、２００９年には59件のうち57件にかかわっていた。実に97％である。

ワシントン州の尊厳死法施行後、最初の数例が行われた際に、その情報を公開したのも州保健局ではなくＣ＆Ｃだった。

他にも、ファイナル・エグジット・ネットワーク（ＦＥＮ）、エグジット（スイスの自殺幇助機関と同じ名称だが、こちらは国際的な組織。「エグジット」とは「出口」「出立」の意味なので「死」の代名詞として支援団体が好んで用いる用語）など、安楽死や自殺幇助の合法化に向けてロビー活動を行うほか、患者と医師らとともに原告となって訴訟を起こしたり、合法すれすれのところで自殺希望者に情報提供や直接的な「支援」まで行うなど、さまざまな団体がさかんに活動している。ＦＥＮは２００９年に闇で自殺幇助を行ったとして幹部やボランティアが逮捕され、９つの州で調査が行われる大きな事件があった。その後２０１１年に相次いで無罪判決が出ているが、現在も続いている訴訟もあり、複雑な事件である。
